Drug couriers ignorant, Qld trial hears

Two men who allegedly couriered parcels of methylamphetamine in Brisbane may not have known they were filled with drugs, a court has heard.

Vikman Schneider Escobar Galeano and Maurice Andres Junco Machado are on trial in the Supreme Court of Brisbane for attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled substance.

The court heard on Thursday that two cardboard boxes from Mexico containing 7.4 kilograms of methylamphetamine were intercepted by customs at Sydney International Airport in October 2013.

Federal police switched the drugs for an inert substance and observed Galeano and Machada collecting the boxes from a Brisbane CBD office a few days later.

Crown prosecutor Bruce Mumford told the court Galeano was seen driving erratically by police after collecting the box, including running a red light, while Junco had left his box outside a Roma Street carpark after making a phone call.

Mr Mumford said in his opening address that the pair's behaviour, when they collected and delivered the boxes, indicated they knew they contained drugs.

Junco's defence lawyer Lars Falcongreen said the Crown had to prove the men intended to possess the drugs.

"It would be unjust for a person to be guilty of an offence for picking up a parcel without knowing what was inside," Mr Falcongreen said.
