Donation ban introduced Qld parliament

Laws to ban developers donating to politicians have been reintroduced to Queensland parliament.

The measure was one of the key recommendations from the Crime and Corruption Commission's Operation Belcarra, which found widespread flouting of political donation rules in the 2016 local government elections.

The government introduced the laws late last year, however the bill lapsed when the election was called and now has to be reintroduced.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe introduced the bill to the house, saying Queenslanders expect transparency and accountability from their candidates at every level of government.

"The extension of the ban to the state level is an important step given the state's significant role in Queensland's planning framework," Mr Hinchliffe told parliament.

The Liberal National Party opposition has flagged a potential legal challenge to the changes.

Queensland LNP President Gary Spence would have to resign under the laws which lapsed last year, because he would be classed as a developer.

The laws will be retrospective to October 12, 2017 when the original bill was introduced.

Any donations from developers to political parties made between that date and the commencement of the bill will not be regarded as an offence if they are repaid within 30 days of the commencement.

Labor officially stopped accepting donations from developers a few days before the bill was introduced last year and called on the LNP to follow suit, which it did.
