Deadly jellyfish warning for Moreton Bay

Visitors to Queensland's Moreton Bay are being warned about a deadly jellyfish spotted in shallow waters off North Stradbroke Island.

The Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, which manages the land and waters surrounding the island off Brisbane, said the Morbakka fenneri jellyfish had only been classified in recent years.

Its sting has been associated with severe Irukandji syndrome and can be fatal.

QYAC join management co-ordinator Darren Burns said people needed to be more aware of the jellyfish.

"We have had a number of serious stings over the years and we don't want to see anyone in the kind of distress the venom causes," he said.

"Being an Irukandji sting the symptoms can sometimes take half an hour or so to start but when they do they are very unpleasant and distressing."

The QYAC urged anyone with severe lower back pain, nausea, vomiting, breathing difficulties, heavy sweating, severe cramps and spasms as the result of a sting, to urgently see a doctor.
