Darwin waterfront to light up for NYE

Darwin revellers will be treated to a fireworks spectacular but may have to brave the rain as they farewell 2016.

The city's waterfront will light up with firework displays at 9pm and midnight on New Year's Eve.

Aussie music icon Diesel will spark up the crowd with a free performance at 9.30pm, while there will also be live local music, children's shows and face painting.

The celebrations kick off at 5pm, with local restaurants and food stalls trading for dinner.

Families can also pack a picnic, spread a blanket and relax on the lawns.

However, revellers should pack a poncho, with storms and rain forecast for both Saturday and Sunday.
