Cyclone Jasper set to intensify off Queensland coast

A large stretch of the Queensland coast is on alert in case Cyclone Jasper makes landfall next week.

The current category three system is expected to strengthen this morning, making it the earliest category four cyclone in the region in 18 years.

At 10pm yesterday, the cyclone was about 1260 kilometres east north-east of Cairns and 535 kilometres south-west of Honiara in the Solomon Islands.

Over the weekend, the cyclone is likely to weaken while turning westward, towards the Queensland coast.

"From Saturday it does take a more westerly trajectory," senior meteorologist Laura Boekel said on Thursday afternoon.

"It's currently moving mostly south then we are seeing it turn on the weekend."

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, while the timing of a coastal impact remains highly uncertain, the highest risk of a cyclone impact lies between Cooktown and Mackay, including Cairns and Townsville.

"As Jasper approaches the coast there is a risk of re-intensification and the potential for severe impacts," the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Mackay Regional Council mayor Greg Williamson urged residents to make preparations.

"We've been through this before on many occasions, as has all of north Queensland," Williamson told Today.

"What we're telling our residents is you need to be prepared."

This sentiment was echoed by Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll.

"Please listen to the radio, newspaper, traditonal media, whatever it is, just be well informed."

The last cyclone that was stronger and earlier was Cyclone Bertie, which reached category four in late November 2005.
