Christensen 'wants to remain with Nats'

Queensland MP George Christensen says he wants to stay in the National Party despite reports he is considering jumping ship to One Nation.

The Courier-Mail reports Mr Christensen has refused to rule out quitting the party and possibly joining One Nation over a dispute between cane growers in his central Queensland electorate and international agribusiness Wilmar Sugar Australia.

He told the paper inaction on the issue would leave him politically "dead" in his electorate of Dawson and added: "I might as well not bother running at the next election under the LNP banner."

Mr Christensen took to Twitter late on Thursday night to play down talk of a defection, saying he was a "proud member of the Nats (National Party)" and he wants to "remain in the Nats".

He released a statement on Friday morning reiterating those views, saying he wanted to "remain a member for many more years".

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said Mr Christensen had also affirmed his loyalty to the party.

"I'm already having discussions with the treasurer and the prime minister about how we work our way around this" Mr Joyce told ABC Radio regarding Mr Christensen's concerns.

Earlier this week, after South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi quit the Turnbull government to set up his own conservative party but Mr Christensen said the senator had never asked him to leave the LNP.

"I'm going to continue here for as long as the party - and I believe the National Party always will be - in tune with conservative vales and in tune with regional electorates," he said on Tuesday.
