QLD Opposition slams new conflict laws

Queensland's opposition has backed criticism of the government over proposed laws meant to keep ministers from using their jobs to benefit themselves.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk last year said her government would back all Crime and Corruption Commission's recommendations sparked by an investment property saga involving Deputy Premier Jackie Trad.

However, the Liberal National Party says the Bill put forward by the government falls below the standard recommended by the CCC.

The Commission itself says the bill weakens the seriousness of potential ministerial misconduct.

The proposed laws lay out two new offences and potential jail time for ministers who fail to disclose a conflict of interest to cabinet or maintain their register of interests introduced to parliament last year.

There's a new criminal offence for ministers who intentionally fail to disclose conflicts of interest with the intent to dishonestly benefit themselves or someone else, or cause detriment to another person.

However, the CCC wants the requirement for proof of dishonest intent included in that offence to be removed.

CCC chair Alan MacSporran wrote in a submission to the committee considering the Bill that it could water down the seriousness of conduct.

He also noted the Bill does not follow a recommendation to remove a cabinet member from office if they intentionally fail to update the register of interest.
