A car has been partially swallowed up by a sinkhole on the Gold Coast.

It's believed a broken water main caused the massive sinkhole on Short Street in Southport about 4am.

The silver Peugeot 206 CC, which was engulfed by muddy waters and broken asphalt, has now been removed by council workers.
