Two men dead in Queensland plane crash

Two men from the same family out on a sunrise joy flight have been killed when their plane crashed at a property in central Queensland. 

The 60-year-old pilot and his 71-year-old brother-in-law were declared dead at the scene of the crash, which was on the pilot's property at Captain Creek, south of Gladstone.

"Unfortunately while attempting to land, the plane has encountered some difficulties," Queensland Police's Ian Hetherington told 9NEWS.

It's understood the plane clipped trees as it attempted to land on the private runway at the Round Hill Road property, missing the airstrip and ploughing through a fence.

Those inside the pilot's nearby home alerted emergency services shortly before 7am.

The two men had set off from the property at sunrise, turning around at Miriam Vale to the west and returning home.

The pilot had already attempted to land at 6.15am, before circling back around for half an hour.

Forensic Crash Unit officers are investigating the cause of the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.

In a separate incident, another person was taken to hospital on Sunday morning after a light plane crash in the Atherton Tablelands.
