Cancer cuts Qld mayor's career short

A Queensland mayor's career has been cut short by cancer.

Gympie mayor Ron Dyne told a council meeting on Tuesday he was unable to continue in his role as he battles the effects of disease.

Mr Dyne was diagnosed in July with bowel, liver and pancreatic cancer, but vowed to continue as mayor until he felt he was no longer able to.

That moment came on Tuesday, when Mr Dyne resigned and handed the reins to Deputy Mayor Tony Perrett, who will continue in the top job until a by-election is held within the next three months.

"In tendering his resignation, Mr Dyne expressed his profound regret at not being able to continue in his role due to the effects of cancer, and thanked his fellow councillors, council staff, the community and his family for their support and well wishes during his illness," a council statement read.

Mr Dyne became mayor of Gympie Regional Council in 2008, having previously been mayor of former Kilkivian Shire Council.
