'Let the kids have their nuggets': Proposal to ban fast food stores being built near Queensland schools divides opinion

A proposal to ban fast food stores from being built near schools in Queensland in a bid to tackle obesity is sparking mixed responses.

The proposal, being put forward by University of Southern Queensland academic Aletha Ward, would mean all unhealthy and fast food restaurants would not be allowed to be built near any Queensland schools.

A similar proposal is being put forward in Western Australia, but goes further to suggest reducing the operating hours of any unhealthy restaurants within 500 metres of a school.

The proposed plan is aimed to drive down obesity rates, with one in four Queensland children being overweight or obese.

Gold Coast residents have had mixed reactions while speaking to Today about the plan.

"Let the kids have all the chicken nuggets,", one said.

"It is a bit too much temptation right near their school."

One teacher told Today he is in agreement with the proposal, despite being a Macca's fan.

"We are always promoting healthy food and healthy locations. So I'm all for McDonald's. Next door to a school? I don't agree with it," he said.

A woman also agreed: "It's a good idea. I can understand why you'd not want to do that."

Meanwhile, one man pointed out the fast food stores provided plenty of employment for the children.

"So I think, on balance, whether it's close by or not, if the kids want it they'll go get it."
