Calls for investigation into Qld abuse

An alleged Brisbane pedophile who kept detailed records of victims more than 30 years ago must be re-investigated through a royal commission, a national child protection organisation says.

Clarence Osborne, who worked as a court stenographer, allegedly kept a file of offences against some 2500 victims over a 20-year period starting in the 1950s.

Osborne took his own life in 1979 after police unearthed three truckloads of detailed notes and pictures of victims at his Mount Gravatt home.

But allegations that he also kept the names of other "high profile" offenders have recently surfaced.

An article published in The Courier Mail's Q Weekend Magazine on Saturday, quoting police sources, claims the names of prominent politicians, police officers, academics and members of the legal profession were on Osborne's lists.

Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston says this new information should be investigated.

"Not a word of this aspect of his filing collection has ever been publicly reported until now," she said.

"This must now be investigated by a totally independent royal commission because it is the only framework in which we can have any confidence."

Osborne kept thousands of photos of naked children as well as hours of tape-recorded conversations with boys, the magazine alleged.
