A north Queensland assistant nurse has been found not guilty of sexually assaulting an elderly dementia patient.

Carlos Mariano Castillo, 62, has been on trial in the Cairns District Court charged with groping the 73-year-old woman's bare breast at a retirement home in 2012.

The woman, who can't be named for legal reasons, had severe dementia and was a patient at the unnamed facility's high risk ward.
