Qld hit-run victim was 'always careful'

The man killed in a hit-and-run southwest of Brisbane has been remembered for his bright smile and generosity, as police try to find the driver who struck him.

Phuc Van Nguyen, 50, was walking with groceries in a quiet suburban street at Inala on Tuesday night when he was hit by a car.

Neighbours rushed to his aid but he was dead by the time they arrived.

Police have been unable to track down the car's driver despite scouring CCTV footage from nearby shops.

His brother Rick flew from Sydney on Friday to appeal for help.

"It's heartbreaking. I was very close to him," he said.

"When he smiled it brings the sunshine to a rainy afternoon. He was a very happy type of person. He'd say hello to everyone.

"(He was) very understanding. He'd never shout at anyone or have ill-thoughts to anyone at all."

Mr Nguyen didn't find out about his brother's death until Wednesday morning after ignoring several phone calls from private numbers on Tuesday night thinking they were telemarketers.

He saw a news bulletin at work with a story about a man involved in a crash who matched his brother's age and location.

"It hit me straight away and I did a Google search," he said.

"He's a very careful man when walking, running or driving a car ... and I said `no it couldn't be him'."

Further details emerged on Wednesday before an email from Inala police with Phuc's photo and birth date confirmed Mr Nguyen's worst fears.

"We were still in denial. We thought `this couldn't be it'".

Senior Sergeant Graeme Symonds said investigators had examined footage from near the scene around Shelduck Street but mostly hit "dead ends".

Police say a tyre print at the scene matches a 4WD or light commercial vehicle, described by some witnesses as loud.

"(The street) wouldn't be a thoroughfare, so we believe the vehicle would more than likely be a local vehicle," Sgt Symonds said.

Mr Nguyen is hoping someone can shed light on his brother's death.

"Our family miss him so much," he said.
