The insurance industry has been left with a bill of more than $1 billion after a ferocious storm that tore through Brisbane in November.

The supercell system carved a path of destruction from Brisbane's southern suburbs, through the city centre and into the north, battering the region with tennis ball-size hailstones and cyclonic winds.

On Thursday morning, 100,223 insurance claims had been lodged for damage to property and motor vehicles, the Insurance Council of Australia said, with an estimated cost of $1.04 billion.

Affected residents should lodge damage claims if they had not done so already, chief executive Rob Whelan said.
