Brisbane mayor slams anti-Islam graffiti

Brisbane's lord mayor has vowed that he will not tolerate religious hate crimes after a mosque in the city's south was defaced with the word "die".

Graffiti telling Muslims to "Get the f*** out of our country" was sprayed across the prayer centre in Rocklea.

Worshippers were also confronted with, "Muslims are evil and have no respect for our ways" and the word "die".

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said he was disappointed but not surprised this senseless act had occurred, as he vowed not to tolerate aggression against religious faiths.

"The last thing we want is vigilantes in this city deciding that they know what's best," he told reporters on Thursday.

"We've had a great level of tolerance in our city for a long time and it ought to remain that way."

He also urged anti-Islamic aggressors to "take a shower", adding the public should trust police to handle terror threats.

"We've got Islamic families that have lived in this city for more than 100 years," he said.

"They ought to have the right to have their places of worship protected."

The mosque defacing is Queensland's second incident of its kind to occur in less than a week.

The word "Evil" was discovered spray painted across a mosque at Mareeba, near Cairns, on Friday.
