Man charged after allegedly posing as Order of Australia recipient

A Brisbane man who allegedly attempted to pose as an Order of Australia recipient has been charged with multiple counts of fraud following a police operation.

Officers allege the man used the title as a means to be invited to several events across Brisbane earlier this year, including trying to organise meetings for his own art business.

The man allegedly claimed to be a recipient of service awards, including the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and Officer of the Order of Australia Officer (AO) and several academic credentials.

Police allege they also found several replica items, including lapel pins and medallions, which bare similarities to actual Order of Australia honours.

Fortitude Valley CIB Detective A/Senior Sergeant Robert Lapresle said arrests like these are essential to ensure public trust when dealing with individuals or businesses and uphold the merit and integrity of the awards being "used".

"Our officers investigate these matters to ensure members of the public can have trust and confidence," Lapresle said.

"The service and merit awards allegedly used in these matters hold significant value to all Australians, and it is important the integrity and merit of these accomplishments are upheld."

The 52-year-old Greenslopes man has been charged with nine counts of fraud and one count of improper use of service decorations.

He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on May 18.
