A toddler playing with a lighter may have accidentally sparked a fire that destroyed his family's North Lakes home, in the Moreton Bay region, last night.

More than 25 firefighters and six trucks were called to the home about 6pm, and battled the well-established for 20 minutes before it was brought under control.

Neighbours also rushed to defend their properties from the flames.

"I grabbed the fire extinguisher raced around through the back here, this side of the house was out of control," one neighbour said.

Two children and their parents were home at the time and managed to escape without injury.

The children's older sibling believes his three-year-old brother started the fire.

"My little brother found a lighter and he just played with it," he told 9NEWS.

"I think he burnt a sheet and it caught on really quick and the house just went down."

Fire investigators and police will now perform forensic testing and speak with the family to establish the cause of the blaze.

It is the second fire at the home in five years.
