Brisbane council puts a stop to 'left turns at red lights'

The amount of intersections where Brisbane drivers can turn left at red lights is reportedly set to be reduced.

Across the city there are 48 intersections where drivers are legally permitted to turn left at red lights as part of a council trial, but this will soon be cut down to 33, the Courier Mail reports.

The ‘Left Turn on Red’ program was first introduced to the city in 2013, and was successful in reducing delays by up to 30 seconds.

However, Councillor Amanda Cooper told the newspaper the Queensland Government has now put the brakes on the trial to align it with “New South Wales road rules”.

“Left turn on red will only be available at sites with less than 120 pedestrians using the intersection,” Ms Cooper told the newspaper.

Intersections at Mitchelton, Windsor, Bracken and Holland Park will be first to have the ‘turn on red’ signage removed, with more intersections set to be investigated to see if they can remain in the trial.
