Bring in Qld lockout laws now: surgeons

Proposed lockout laws for Queensland pubs and clubs should be passed by parliament immediately, surgeons say.

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) says the recent death of Brisbane teen Cole Miller in an alleged one-punch attack highlights the need for urgent action.

The laws would force most state venues to serve last drinks at 2am.

RACS Queensland committee chairman Professor Owen Ung has called on the Liberal National Party and independent MPs to support the reforms.

"In St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney we saw a 20-40 per cent reduction in injuries when similar laws came in," he told AAP.

"We need effective statesmanship and a bipartisan approach free from undue liquor industry self-interest and interference."

RACS said nearly three in four king-hit attacks nationally were alcohol related, with many victims suffering permanent brain injury.

Prof Ung's comments come after the Distilled Spirits Industry Council of Australia described plans to ban shots after midnight as "patently absurd".

According to News Corp, the DSICA wrote to a committee reviewing the draft bill claiming it singled out spirits.

"The proposed bill would allow a consumer in a typical pub or club at 1am to order a bottle of wine (approximately seven standard drinks) or a jug of beer (approximately four standard drinks), but not a single serve of whisky on ice (one standard drink)," they wrote.

Late last week, Acting Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek called on the government to develop a plan similar to the former LNP government's 60-point Safe Night Out Strategy.

A report from the parliamentary legal affairs and community safety committee is due on February 8.
