Ashleigh Humphrys was celebrating her 20th birthday.

The driver who struck and killed a 20-year-old woman on a Brisbane highway was on his way to work in the city at the time of the accident, police believe.

CCTV footage shows Ashleigh Humphrys staggered from one road lane to another on the Western Freeway at Toowong, shortly before 4am on Sunday, as she tried to walk home after a night out celebrating her birthday.

It is understood a dark sedan drove down the same lane and possibly struck the young woman as she was lying on the road.

CCTV did not capture the crash itself.

A taxi driver who saw the incident jotted down the sedan's number plate and notified police, who discovered the sedan belonged to a man who had a shift in the city that morning, the Courier-Mail reports.

The driver is believed to have gone to work as normal.

Police are investigating if he was aware he had struck Ms Humphrys.

He has been interviewed by police and his car is undergoing forensic testing.

No charges have been laid.
