Balcony fall death may have come after meeting on Tinder

The 26-year-old woman who fell to her death from the 14th floor of a Gold Coast high-rise reportedly met the owner of the apartment only hours before through dating app Tinder.

The Gold Coast Bulletin said that sources close to the investigation said Warriena Tagpuno Wright came to the Avalon building in Surfers Paradise after connecting with Gable Tostee, 28, through the popular social media service.

Mr Tostee and Ms Wright were allegedly seen drinking on the apartment’s balcony shortly before her death at around 2.30am.

Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson said that the incident was being treated as suspicious as police attempted to find out what happened.

At 2.20am, witnesses were woken by loud screams and raised voices echoing from the 14th floor of Avalon Apartments.

"I heard her screaming once, then she stopped. Then she screamed and then she stopped again. I think she screamed a third time and after that I heard a bang," witness Tania said.

"Very upsetting, very upsetting, I couldn't believe it."

Witness Adam said: "By the sounds of things it's happened on my side of the building, right by my bedroom window".

David Hutchinson of Queensland Police said: "Voices were heard and noises were heard coming from the unit".

"A male person was at the scene almost immediately and contacted police, and police were there within minutes."

When officers arrived, they searched the unit she fell from but it was empty.

Mr Tostee was questioned for around two hours yesterday at Surfers Paradise Police Station before being released without charge.
