Mothers and babies have been transferred from a central Queensland hospital after a piece of machinery caught fire and filled two levels with smoke.

Patients were evacuated from the Mackay Mater Hospital on Monday night after emergency power equipment stored on the third floor failed and started billowing smoke.

Up to six women and babies from the maternity ward were transferred to the Mackay Base Hospital for treatment and those still requiring care were returned to the Mater on Tuesday.
