Alleged schoolies basher to face hearing

An 18-year-old NSW man who allegedly left another teen with serious head injuries during a fight at Gold Coast's Schoolies celebrations will face a court hearing in April.

Maddy Khal will face a hearing on two counts of common assault for the alleged attack which happened during the annual end-of-year event at Surfers Paradise in November.

It's alleged Khal and another man, Daniel El-Nacher, 17, got into a fight with the victim following a verbal argument over religion.

Khal is accused of hitting the victim twice while he was lying on the ground before then spitting on him.

The 18-year-old victim initially didn't pursue the matter immediately after the alleged assault but later reported to a Queensland Ambulance Service trauma centre with symptoms of a head injury.

He was transported to hospital and placed in an induced coma but was discharged a day later.

El-Nacher is already set to face a sentencing hearing at Southport Magistrates Court in March on a charge of grievous bodily harm.

Khal didn't appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday as the date for his own hearing was set for April 27.
