Alleged Qld racist appears in court

A woman who allegedly hurled abuse at a Muslim human rights activist on social media has made her first appearance in a Queensland court.

Ipswich woman Jay-Leighsa Victoria Bauman, 22, was in February charged after she allegedly unleased a racially-fuelled tirade at activist and lawyer Mariam Veiszadeh last year.

Ms Veiszadeh, who fled Afghanistan as a child, had complained to Woolworths over the sale in Cairns of a T-shirt carrying the slogan "Love it or leave", accompanied by an Australian flag.

The complaint was then highlighted by the anti-Islam group Australian Defence League.

Posting on Facebook, Ms Bauman allegedly demanded Ms Veiszadeh return to her own "sand dune country" and referred to her as a rag-head, among other derogatory terms.

The 22-year-old, wearing a dark suit, appeared in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday on one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.

She made no formal plea and her lawyer Erin Dwan requested the matter be adjourned until March 17.

Ms Bauman left the courthouse and made no comment when asked if she owed Ms Veiszadeh an apology.

After she was charged, it's alleged Ms Bauman again took to Facebook to publicly announce she was "not scared of a bit of judgment" and wouldn't "stay silent so that YOU can stay comfortable".
