Smoky night ahead for Rockhampton

Central Queensland residents have been warned to shut windows ahead of a smoky night, with bushfires burning north of Rockhampton.

The Queensland Fire Service said on Thursday evening it expected thick smoke to blow south to Rockhampton, Yeppoon and Gladstone over the following few hours.

"These fires are burning within containment lines in an inaccessible area and are posing no threat to property at this time," a spokesman said in a statement.

Residents are asked to close windows and doors and, if suffering from a respiratory condition, keep medications close by.

People with air conditioning should switch it to "recycle" or "recirculate" mode.

Meanwhile, a bushfire that was burning through vegetation near the southern Queensland town of Glen Esk, has been brought under control.

Firefighters have the blaze under control and the fire service says no property is being threatened.

Crews are blackening out areas around the fire and will remain on scene overnight to monitor.

The fire has flared up as September heat records in parts of southeast Queensland are broken, with temperatures at Ipswich and Gatton pushing 40 celcius.

A severe fire danger rating is in place, along with fire bans, across southeast Queensland.
