Activists reject Adani's 'weak' rehab plan

Environmental activists want the Queensland government to stop any works on the $16 billion Carmichael coal mine until Adani can formulate a five-year rehabilitation plan for the project.

Lock the Gate Alliance says the current Carmichael Plan of Operations only includes a six-month rehabilitation plan, which it says is not enough.

Lock the Gate spokeswoman Carmel Flint says the Queensland government should reject the "weak short-term plan" and Adani should be required to stump up a $2 billion cash bond before work begins.

Adani says it has reached an agreement with the government to progressively rehabilitate the site as each stage of the work takes place.

"We will abide by those state government requirements in terms of rehabilitation," spokesman Ron Watson told AAP.

Mr Watson says soil testing and surveying is currently underway in the Galilee Basin, with construction work set to commence on schedule later this year.
