Tas man in court over Qld cold case murder

A 62-year-old man charged with the decades-old murder of a wealthy Gold Coast inventor has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

Philip Michael Stearman, who previously lived on the Gold Coast, was extradited from Tasmania to Brisbane on Tuesday.

He was charged with the murder of Hugo Benscher, 89, who was found dead at his canal-front home on June 21, 1992.

After a brief appearance on Wednesday, Stearman will appear by video link in Brisbane Magistrates Court again on March 23.

He was remanded in custody.

Stearman's court appearance comes a day after Queensland Police continued to call for more help to solve the murder.

Detectives have not ruled out further arrests.

Police believe there are more people who have information about the murder who might be more willing to give information following Stearman's arrest.

A $250,000 reward is on offer.

Police also want to speak to anyone who interacted with Mr Benscher at the Runaway Bay Yacht Club around 1992 or have knowledge of a boat coming into the Paradise Point canal where Mr Benscher lived on the night of his murder.

Mr Benscher came to Australia from Hamburg in 1948.

He invented the inflatable ball bladder and valve for sporting equipment.
