Accused Qld killer thief denied bail

A man charged over the death of a West Australian tourist whose body was found naked and bound in a Gold Coast unit has been denied bail.

Benjamin Samy Ghobrial, 26, was charged with manslaughter and robbery in company, among other offences, following the death of Gregory John Hudson.

The 57-year-old man's body was found naked and bound in a Varsity Lakes unit in October 2014.

Ghobrial sought bail in Brisbane's Supreme Court on Monday having failed in a bid in May last year.

But he was knocked back again, with Justice Martin Burns noting the allegation Ghobrial had threatened a prospective crown witness "was and remains very concerning".

Ghobrial's legal team had submitted he wanted to take up a full-time position in a drug rehabilitation clinic if successful.

His trial was also unlikely to proceed until February or March next year, despite initially being slated for the second half of 2016, the court heard.

While he rejected the application, Justice Burns accepted a witness, who alleged Ghobrial had made some admissions, had since revised their evidence so it was less robust.

The crown alleges Ghobrial also dressed in "female Muslim clothing" and used bank cards to withdraw money from the 57-year-old's account.

In his submissions, prosecutor Benjamin Jackson said text message evidence demonstrated Ghobrial "hatched a plan" along with his co-accused resulting in a callous attack.

"It is a probable consequence that if you restrain a man, put a hood over his head and leave him there, he may die," he said.

But defence barrister Justin Lewis said some of the evidence against his client was lacking and there was a possibility Mr Hudson had suffered a heart attack after taking a fatal amount of cocaine.
