Concerns for alleged Qld hostel arsonist

A Brisbane man accused to trying to ignite a Fortitude Valley backpackers hostel has been kept in custody amid concerns for his mental welfare.

Adrian John Highlands, 28, allegedly smashed a window to break into the Gipps Street hostel on Monday night before using an accelerant to start a blaze.

Emergency workers said it was lucky no one was injured after the building's fire alarms activated and allowed all guests and staff - about 200 people - to evacuate safely.

The fire caused minor damage to two rooms.

Highlands was arrested after another man allegedly saw him flee through the smashed window and followed him to a nearby car park.

He appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday charged with attempted arson and unlawfully entering a premises.

Lawyer Tim Clements told the court there were real concerns for Highland's mental welfare and his ability to say what he wants.

Mr Clements said Highlands could be suffering a drug induced mental state and should be kept in custody overnight so he could see a nurse in the morning.

The case was adjourned to Tuesday.
