4WD lost to Qld camping hole for good

Authorities will no longer try to retrieve vehicles lost in a hole that opened up at a popular Queensland camping spot.

About 300 campers were evacuated from Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach on Saturday night after the "near shore landslide event" claimed a caravan, a car, a trailer and tents.

Specialist staff were able to retrieve the camper van on Tuesday and retrieved part of the caravan and "miscellaneous floating debris" on Wednesday.

But Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says the four-wheel-drive will have to stay put.

"The caravan chassis, deeply embedded in the underwater sand bed, was not recoverable and there remains no sign of the four-wheel-drive," said QPWS in a statement.

"Diving and recovery specialists have advised that they are unable to retrieve the remaining vehicles and efforts to do so will cease from today."

But the site will be cleared, secured and barricaded.

The area remains closed to the public.

Geotechnical experts say minor erosion could continue at the site for several weeks.

The experts said the incident wasn't a "true" sinkhole as it had previously been labelled, but rather a landslide along the peninsula.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is continuing.
