A veteran truck driver has narrowly missed a head-on collision after a car drifted lanes straight into his path on a busy Queensland highway.

Ron Goldsmith was forced to swerve his 42-tonne truck off the Gore Highway near Pampas, 190km west of Brisbane, when he spotted a 4WD drifting in and out his lane.

The incident was captured on his dash cam and Mr Goldsmith, a truck driver of 36 years, said it was one of the closest calls of his career on the road.

"He kept coming over to my side all the time and that told me he wasn't awake or at the wheel," Mr Goldsmith told A Current Affair.

He was travelling at 100km/h when he swerved his truck to avoid the collision.

"The only choice I had was off to my left, which is a gravel surface," he said.

"It's a tough decision because your life is on the line as well as theirs."
