Helicopter escapee back behind bars

Convicted armed robber John Killick, who served time for a brazen helicopter escape from a Sydney prison, is back in jail - this time in Queensland.

Killick handed himself in to police in Brisbane on Friday, after losing a bid last month against extradition from NSW.

The 72-year-old, who made a brazen escape from a Sydney prison in 1999 in a helicopter hijacked by his then girlfriend Lucy Dudko, was ordered to return to Queensland over an alleged breach of bail 21 years ago.

He could be forced to serve the two-and-a-half-year balance of a sentence imposed for an armed robbery in 1983.

Killick says he's accepted he must face the music.

"I'm fine. I've accepted it and I just hope for the best," he told reporters at police headquarters in Brisbane.

Killick was granted parole in NSW in April, after serving 15 years behind bars, including for escaping from Silverwater jail in a helicopter that his girlfriend Lucy Dudko hijacked in 1999.

A NSW magistrate initially refused a request from Queensland police to extradite him, saying there were questions over the validity of the warrant issued against him.

But the NSW Supreme Court last month ruled he must return and face the consequences of his past actions.
