Queensland child sex offenders will be required to give police access to their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said new laws would see pedophiles give police all social media passwords.

"We make no apology for the tough stance made in this respect," he told parliament.

But opposition police spokesman Bill Byrne said innocent Facebook users could have their privacy compromised by police surveillance, adding sex offenders should be banned from social media.

"It condones the use of social media by convicted sex offenders by asking them for their passwords and account details," he said.

Labor voted against the bill, which allows some offenders to report online to police rather than in person.

Pedophiles will be required to tell authorities about any change of address or travel plans within seven days, instead of 14.

They will also have to report to the police commissioner every three months instead of annually.

The laws passed through parliament on Wednesday night.
