"Our hearts go out to them and our prayers are there for them," he told parliament.

"We're all there in solidarity in a difficult time for their family. It is the most tragic and awful event."

Police say an 18-year-old woman died in a crash near Glen Innes on Sunday evening on the New England Highway, between Deepwater and Dundee.

Her Volkswagen Beetle left the road and crashed into a tree. She died at the scene.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk extended her sympathies.

"We heard about the tragedy last night and it has deeply shocked all of us on the opposition side as it has through the whole of parliament," she said.
