Queensland activists hope to put medicinal cannabis on election agenda

A group of Queensland mums will endeavour to put cannabis on the state election agenda, to save their sick children.

The activists will stage a protest in Brisbane's Queen Street Mall today, in the hopes that politicians will hear their pleas to legalise medicinal cannabis.

"We are tired. We have sick children who need round-the-clock care but no matter how tired we are we will not give up," said campaigner Michelle Whitelaw.

The comments follow the arrest of a Cairns father, charged with using cannabis oil to treat his cancer-stricken daughter.

The 30-year-old man faced the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday charged with supplying dangerous drugs to a minor after he was arrested this month outside the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

"How do they expect us to sit back and accept nothing when we know this could save our children from dying," posted Deborah Camacho on the protest event's Facebook page.

The campaign follows the NSW government's announcement last month it would begin a $9 million trial for medicinal cannabis.

Under new guidelines, NSW police would have the discretion not to charge terminally-ill cannabis users and carers who assist them for breaking drug laws.
