Qld man died from 'medical negligence'

The family of a Queensland man who died after being sent home by two separate doctors wants a coronial inquest into his death.

Townsville man Matthew Russo, 37, was found dead on January 6, less than a week after he first sought treatment for flu-like symptoms.

Mr Russo was sent home by one doctor with cough mixture on January 2.

News Corp Australia reports he was coughing up blood and suffering from pneumonia when he saw a different doctor on January 5.

The doctor reportedly prescribed him antibiotics, sent him home and he was found dead the next day.

His mother Judy Jensen says if he had been admitted to hospital he would still be alive.

"I want something like this to never happen again," she told The Townsville Bulletin.

"I have been robbed of my son," she said.

A spokeswoman for the Queensland Health Ombudsman was not able to confirm which medical centres or hospitals were involved in the matter.

But the Ombudsman was aware of the matter, she said.

The Office of the State Coroner confirmed Mr Russo's death is currently under investigation.

Northern coroner Kevin Priestly will examine the full circumstances of his death, a spokesperson said in a written response.

"Once the requested reports have been received, a decision will be made on whether or not an inquest is required."
