Three new cases of black lung disease have been confirmed in Queensland.

The state's department of natural resources confirmed the additional cases on Thursday, taking the official number to 14.

However, the CFMEU says it knows of more than 30 people who have contracted the disease.

The most recent cases include a retired miner who died in July.

The union believes there are more miners who have the disease but are too scared to come forward for fear of losing their jobs.

Queensland mines have higher legal dust limit levels than NSW and the United States.

The potentially fatal disease was dormant in Queensland for decades before re-emerging in the past 12 months.

There hasn't been a change to dust limits since its return.
