Qld bikies in extortion ring to seek bail

At least six of 15 alleged Bandidos bikies charged over a southeast Queensland extortion ring will apply for bail.

Two of the six will allege they have never been Bandidos members at all.

A total of 15 patched members and associates of the outlaw motorcycle gang were arrested following raids in Logan, Brisbane and the Gold Coast at the weekend.

The group is facing almost 70 offences, including serious assault and 35 counts of extortion.

Milan Kalanj, 26, and Bosko Cuic, 24, will seek bail in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday after being charged with extortion and accused of being either involved in or a member of the Bandidos.

Defence lawyer Peter Shields says both deny they are Bandidos members, or have ever been members.

Accused Gold Coast sergeant-at-arms Ben Thornton, 23, and West End member Emmanuel Janouris, 31, will apply for bail at the same time.

Former Bandidos Centro president George Bejat, 27, and alleged West End chapter sergeant-at-arms Zivko Stojakovic, 26, will seek bail on Friday after being arrested on extortion and other charges.

Alleged West End president Anthony Toumpas, 32, and accused member Joshua Vosuqa will not apply for bail and will have their matters heard for committal review on April 28.

Mr Shields, who represented most of those charged who appeared in court on Monday morning, refused to speak to the media afterwards.

"Unlike the Queensland Police Service, I'm not going to hold a courtside press conference and outline what the allegations are," he told reporters.

"It's a matter for the courts and the courts will deal with it in the appropriate way."

Police allege victims handed over $16,000 in cash and $24,000 worth of jewellery and other property to avoid being bashed.

But they say there were bashings, including one man who needed facial reconstruction surgery.

Young, well-built men in inner-city gyms, who had done nothing to deserve the attention of violent thugs, were prime targets, police allege.
