Queensland 'bikie' faces 15 years for assault

An alleged Queensland bikie accused of assaulting a motorcyclist over a leather jacket is not a flight risk despite facing 15 years imprisonment under new laws, his lawyer says.

Alleged Rebels members Arthur Chamberlin Juckes and Mark Brenton Blomeley appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday to apply for bail.

The pair and a third man were charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in company of a vicious lawless associate after allegedly bashing another man at his Cairns home on December 21.

Juckes is alleged to have approached a motorcyclist at Palm Cove, north of Cairns, and told him to take off his jacket, which had "Harley-Davidson" written on it, but the man refused.

It is alleged Juckes, Blomeley and alleged fellow gang member Joshua Graeme Hutchins tracked down the man to his Cairns home and assaulted him that day, leaving him seriously injured.

Under the Newman government's anti-bikie laws, participants in criminal gangs have an extra 15 years imprisonment tacked on to their sentence if convicted of a serious offence, or 25 years for office-bearers.

Juckes' barrister, Craig Eberhardt, said his client was not a flight risk, despite the potential hefty sentence, because he had extensive family ties to the Cairns area and had never absconded in the past.

Mr Eberhardt said proposed bail conditions, including a curfew and a $30,000 surety, provided significant disincentives for his client to reoffend.

He added that the Crown case was not strong and it depended upon the identification evidence of two witnesses.

Both bail applications have been adjourned until Thursday.
