Qld alpaca deaths spark new cruelty laws

People who torture animals will face seven years' jail under new laws to be introduced in Queensland.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie has moved to toughen penalties after youths escaped jail time last year for bashing two alpacas to death at a southeast Queensland school.

"We have shared the community's frustration when offenders walk from court without serving any jail time," Mr Bleijie told reporters on Friday.

"Animals feel fear and pain just like us."

RSPCA Queensland chief executive Mark Townend welcomed the move.

"Our inspectors and staff have seen the horrific aftermath of serious cruelty to animals and a strong punishment and deterrent is needed," he said.

The new offence of serious animal cruelty, which targets people who intentionally inflict severe pain and suffering, is due to be introduced in coming weeks.
