Last Qantas 747 jumbo reaches desert resting place in California after final flight from Sydney

The last of Qantas' 747 planes has arrived at its final resting place.

After taking off from Sydney Airport on Friday, the plane has arrived at an airstrip and boneyard in the Mojave desert in California.

Captain Sharell Quinn, led the veteran crew who flew the plane's final journey.

"There was a lot of 'this is the last time we'll do this'," she told 9News.

"'I'll let you do this' and because it was everybody's last time really.

"Check lists, taking off, landing. And we just shared it amongst ourselves. The last shutdown, everybody had a turn of shutting down each engine."

She is one of two female pilots, the first to fly the 747's, who turned back the clock to recreate the photo they took on day one in 1984.

The plane is now lined up behind three other Qantas jumbos.

They have been sold and there is a chance they will fly again- but minus the flying kangaroo on their tail.

The hot dry climate in the desert prevents corrosion, giving the planes a longer life while in storage.

But it could also become their final resting place.

Captain Ewen Cameron said it was a "great honour" to complete the journey.
