Campers in North Queensland have received the shock of their lives after witnessing a snake devouring a kangaroo for dinner.

The snake, which is believed to be an amethystine python, sat just metres from a campsite in Cooktown while enjoying its meal.

The python can clearly be seen unhinging its jaw to make room for the kangaroo in video taken by a camper, which was uploaded on Tuesday according to Daily Mail.

“I’m whispering because you can see, it’s eating a kangaroo” says Helen Smart, the video’s narrator.

“Poor little kangaroo."

Over a period of several minutes, the snake widens and disjoints parts of its body as it squeezes the kangaroo into its mouth.

At one point during the video, all that can be seen of the kangaroo is a pair of feet and a bushy tail, however it later appears to have been able to swallow the marsupial whole.

The amethystine python is Australia’s largest snake, with one reported specimen having been recorded at an amazing eight metres long.
