A landmark inquiry into the Australian public service has handed over its final report to the Morrison government.

The inquiry, headed by businessman David Thodey since May 2018, considered more than 1500 submissions and comments and held hearings across the country in a bid to find ways to make the public service fit for the future.

The recommendations of the report - which has not been publicly released - will now be considered by department secretaries ahead of a cabinet discussion.
