An estimated 8000 emergency service workers Australia-wide have post-traumatic stress disorder but there is no standard way of diagnosing or treating them, despite their high risk of being affected.

To help "tackle the scourge", NSW Mental Health Minister Pru Goward and medical experts will release guidelines on Wednesday that they say are world-first clinical directions for the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD in emergency service workers.

The guidelines will also examine related issues like depression and substance use and will be launched at the NSW parliament on Wednesday.
