Protesters attempt to foil Campbell Newman’s LNP fundraiser

Protesters have tried to gatecrash Campbell Newman's $250-a-head LNP fundraiser in costume, wearing giant fake Tony Abbott heads.

The demonstrators were politely turned away but they got closer than the real Tony Abbott, who hasn't campaigned in Queensland at all.

“I'm very conscious of the fact that Campbell wants to run his own race,” the prime minister said when asked why he hadn’t helped the premier on the campaign trail.

The Prince Philip “knightmare” hasn’t helped the LNP’s cause in recent days and Mr Newman’s own seat of Ashgrove is strongly in favour of a republic.

Mr Newman was undeterred, announcing new promises ahead of Saturday’s poll.

These are some of the new commitments:

• $1 billion the new BaT tunnel

• Stage two of the Gold Coast light rail.

• $295 million for level crossing upgrades

The premier knows things aren't looking good and has warned a hung parliament would mean a “hung Queensland”.

But local issues will determine who wins this election, the premier vowing south-east Queenslanders will pay less for water and electricity under his watch.

The campaign heads north tonight.
