Professional tennis player charged over alleged thrown match

A professional tennis player has been arrested in Sydney accused of throwing a match at a Queensland tournament in 2013.

NSW Police says officers from Strike Force Wilbertree executed a search warrant on a home at Liberty Grove in Sydney's inner west about 7.30am yesterday and arrested a 26-year-old man.

Police will allege the professional tennis player intentionally lost the match, while another person successfully bet on the match outcome.

A betting agency detected unusual betting and reported it to police.

Strike Force Wilbertree was established by NSW's Organised Crime Squad's Casino and Racing Unit after information was received from Victoria Police.

Inquiries had been conducted by the Tennis Integrity Unit and Victoria Police, before being referred to the NSW Police Force for further investigation.

The 26-year-old was later charged with various corrupt betting offences and was granted conditional bail to appear in Burwood Local Court on March 12.

A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with hindering a police investigation.

He was granted conditional bail and is also due in the same court on March 12.

A third man has been issued with a future court attendance notice following an investigation into corrupt betting at an entry-level tennis tournament in September 2013.

The third man, aged 25, from Valentine, near Lake Macquarie, was issued a court attendance notice and will appear at Belmont Local Court on April 8.

Investigations are continuing.
