The Productvity Commission will begin a study into the efficiency and competitiveness of the superannuation system in September as part of a broader 18-month inquiry.

The commission will consult widely, including conducting industry roundtables, to make sure the system is fit for purpose and is seeking submissions from interest parties by September 9.

"Our superannuation system is large, complex and has broad reach. This means even small system improvements can offer significant financial benefits to Australian workers, particularly in their retirement," commissioner Angela MacRae said in a statement on Tuesday.
