Traffic chaos on major Melbourne freeway after crash

A crash on a major Melbourne freeway has sparked traffic chaos after all city-bound lanes were forced to close.

A man in 40s crashed into the barrier of the Princes Freeway in Officer, in the city's outer south-east, just after 12.30pm.

An air ambulance is on route to rescue the man who remains trapped inside his vehicle.

It is understood the man has suffered hip injuries, but is in a stable condition.

All inbound lanes of the freeway have been closed at Cardinia Road.

Heavy traffic is piling on to the freeway, with motorists being urged to consider using the Princes Highway as an alternative route.
