Prince Harry cost Australians $150,000 to visit

Taxpayers forked out $75,000 a night for Prince Harry to visit last year, a price dramatically more than any other official visit under the Abbott government.

Senate documents have revealed Australians paid $150,000 for the royal's two-day stay in October, during which time he was entertained for the International Fleet Review, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Burma's National League for Democracy, spent five nights in Australia at the end of last year touring universities and meeting with Prime Minister Tony Abbott at a total cost to the taxpayer of just under $40,000, the newspaper reports.

Meanwhile, Australians were charged $12,000 for the one-day visit from New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and about $151,000 for a six-night stay by Indonesia's Vice President Boediono in November.

The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet did not provide a breakdown of the money spent on Prince Harry, but said the "broad categories of costs for these visits could include transport (air/ground/water), accommodation, hospitality and other visit related costs."
